DRAWING, AND THE QUESTION OF QUALITY.
Tim’s intention is to capture moments of wholeness (completeness) in form and movement. His engagement with the process of dressage involves reflective questioning:
How do riders evaluate quality in performance?-What is central to quality for both rider and horse?-What strategies or philosophies are employed by trainers, in the achievement of quality of performance?
Riders are absorbed in their process in a similar way that Tim is involved in his. As he strives for a balance, completeness and harmony in his drawings, they struggle for the same. The rider is aiming for an essential harmony between the shape (or out line) the horse should make in dressage, and a certain quality to the paces. The objective is an aesthetic one, achieved through this combination of dynamic elements. The agenda for Tim is to represent that combination of, and harmony between, shape and movement.
These questions are relevant to Tim because in order to represent the experience of dressage in his drawings, he must understand it’s focuses and it’s aims; as much as he must understand the focuses and aims of his own drawing. This means an analysis, in both cases, of what is the nature of quality? What is aspired to? What is the ideal? And what methods are employed to achieve it?
